Opening of the XVIII New German Cinema Film Festival
Today, ProCredit Bank, Goethe-Institut and Arthouse Traffic open the XVIII New German Cinema Film Festival in Kyiv. The festival will screen the best German films from the last year. Five films which have already won festival awards and European acclaim will be screened in Kyiv, Donetsk, Odesa, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk and Chernovtsy.
The New German Cinema Film Festival will open in Kyiv with the screening of “Barbara”. This drama about a woman trying to escape from East Germany in the 1980s earned director Christian Petzold the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival and the German Film Academy silver award.
The festival will screen the following films: ‘If Not Us, Who’, a beautiful story of bohemian young Western Germans in the 1960s featuring August Diehl and Alexander Fehling, which won several Berlin International Film Festival awards and the German Film Academy bronze award; ‘Cracks in the Shell’, the story of a drama student, that won the golden award of the German Film Academy for Best Supporting Actress; ‘Stopped On Track’, an intimate and heartfelt portrait of a middle-aged man who learns he has a malignant tumour, which was honoured with the prize of “Un Certain Regard” at the Cannes Film Festival and four gold awards from the German Film Academy; and ‘Home for the Weekend’, an epic family drama which was the Berlin Film Festival competition film.
Screenings of the XVIII New German Cinema Film Festival movies will begin in Kyiv and Odesa on 11 October, In Donetsk on 14 October, in Dnipropetrovsk on 18 October, in Chernovtsy on 26 October, in Lviv on 4 November and in Kharkiv on 9 November.
